Larry M. Gartner, MD - Vice Chair/Grants
Born in Brooklyn, New York, I received my undergraduate education at Columbia University and my medical degree from Johns Hopkins University. Returning to New York after an internship in Pediatrics at Hopkins, I continued my training in pediatrics at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, specializing in neonatology and pediatric liver disease. The great majority of my basic laboratory and clinical research has been in the area of neonatal jaundice, with particular reference to its relationship to breastfeeding. At Einstein, I rose to Professor of Pediatrics and Director of the Children's Clinical Research Unit. In 1980, I was appointed Professor and Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at The University of Chicago and Director of Wyler Children's Hospital. I have now published more than 200 papers in scientific medical journals. My wife Carol and I, write on medical history.
In 1998, I retired from The University of Chicago and move to Valley Center, with my wife Carol, also a retired Professor (of English) and Dean from Purdue University. Together we enjoy fruit and vegetable gardening and continue to write and lecture. My current academic title is Professor Emeritus, Departments of Pediatrics and Obstetrics/Gynecology at The University of Chicago.
We have two children, Alex, a movie producer in Hollywood, and Madeline, a breast and endocrine surgeon in Minneapolis, and four grandchildren. My interest in trails comes from my involvement in children's health issues, my work in pediatric nutrition, and my desire to have trails in Valley Center to ensure an active life style for everyone in town. Both my wife Carol and I, are active hikers.
